Copyediting (also called line editing)
A copyeditor ensures the text is clear, correct, concise, comprehensible, and consistent.
A copyeditor
- corrects spelling, grammar, and punctuation;
- checks for consistency, redundancy, flow, transition, and proper use of words;
- offers suggestions or copywriting for smooth transitions;
- provides clarity, eliminates confusion, and offers suggestions to keep the reader’s interest;
- determines if the text is suitable for the intended audience; and
- maintains the writer’s style and tone while polishing the manuscript and improving copy.
“We are thrilled to work with Alexandra as a copyeditor and proofreader. Her sharp editing skills paired with her deep teaching experience has made her an ideal editor for the materials we write for schools. We have a high level of confidence in her work and expertise and, as a result, the final products we publish. Additionally, she is a pleasure to work with. She always meets deadlines and is very communicative, whether in regard to timelines, needed clarity on work, or opportunities to discuss ideas. We highly recommend Alexandra!”

Proofreading
Proofreading is the final stage of editing. After copyediting and formatting, a proofreader will review a text with intensely careful attention to detail and check spelling, grammar, verb tense, and formatting consistency. A proofreader will not make any substantive changes.
Developmental editing (also called substantive editing)
A developmental editor gets involved in the early stages of the writing process to help organize ideas. Writing is woven with editing throughout the entire organization of a manuscript. The editor evaluates the text as a whole and addresses issues with structure, coherence, and logic; sentences and paragraphs may be moved or heavily revised.
